Kurt Newman has been active as a free improvisor since 1997. He is very interested in many different facets of experimental music, but focusses primarily on exploring the language of British non-idiomatic guitar playing in small group improvisation within regular ensembles (Wrist Error, with Mike Gennaro, and A Choir Invisible, with Eric Chenaux) and in solo guitar performances. He has also had regular collaborations with many other local improvisors, including Aimée Dawn Robinson, Doug Tielli (with whom he maintains the Takayangi-Abe/Ventures tribute group War of the Satellites), Mauro Savo, John Oswald, Allison Cameron and Dan Friedman.

Together with Gennaro, he curated the Ulterior series at the Victory Cafe for several seasons. Additionally, he plays steel guitar in Martin Arnold's chamber-garage ensemble Marmots and is one half of the duo Golden Melody Awards with Ryan Driver. A Choir Invisible has performed at the No Music Festival 1999, the VTO festival, Casa del Popolo and the Zeitgeist Gallery. Wrist Error has performed at the Constellation label's Musique Fragile venue in Montreal and at The Empty Bottle's Wednesday Night Series in Chicago. Regular and irregular collaborators include John Butcher, Eugene Chadbourne, Kevin Drumm, Mats Gustafsson, Henry Kaiser, Thomas Lehn, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Alexandre St-Onge, and Roger Turner. Nice things and faint praise have been published in Musicworks, The Wire, the Chicago Reader and The Improvisor magazines.
